Research Experience

Ph.D. Research
Adviser: Dr. Lisa Montplaisir
Research focus is on examining student understanding in an upper-level biology course in which the instructor implemented portfolio-based assessment. I analyzed components of student portfolios including written reflections and inquiry. I developed a coding rubric to determine quality of reflections and coded inquiry questions based upon Bloom's Taxonomy. In addition, I transformed reflections into concept webs to analyze student integrative thinking.

M.S. Research
Adviser: Dr. Mark Clark
Research focus was on the effect of density dependence on physiology and behavior in Rainbow Darters (Etheostoma caeruleum). Fish populations were manipulated at different densities then metabolic rate was measured and from blood samples glucose and heterophil to lymphocyte ratios were determined. Behavioral trials were setup with models of conspecifics, competitors, and predators to determine behavioral response of each fish.

Research

My Masters research focused on studying density dependence in fish. Specifically, I examined physiological and behavioral costs of crowding in Rainbow Darters (Etheostoma caeruleum).

As a Master's student I was given the opportunity to TA Human Anatomy and Physiology Labs. This sparked my interest in teaching and I went on to teach at other colleges in the area. Due to these opportunities, I realized I had a passion for teaching and I decided to continue my education by bridging my two interests in science and educating others about science.

Currently my research focuses on portfolio-based assessment in higher education. Specifically, I focus on student reflections and inquiries and if these components promote meaningful learning in an upper-level biology course.
